Web services technology connects two applications by using XML-based protocols. An application requests a service from another cooperating application by sending an XML-based message to it. This message is called a SOAP request. The requestor embeds a method call for the remote application within the message. In addition, this message contains the parameters required by the remote method. The remote application executes the requested method and may send another XML-based message in response to the requestor. Like the requesting message, the response is also in SOAP format and contains the return value of the remote procedure call. This request/response messaging model is illustrated in Figure 3-1.

In this script, you have a debug variable you can set either by editing the script or by passing a CGI parameter. You use a second variable to switch off the ability to enable debugging via a parameter (so you don t unwittingly give clients the ability to study your scripts). A security-conscious administrator might also want to check the originating IP address of requests or require that users are authenticated before allowing the debug flag to be enabled. You can also have the script open and write to its own private log file. This is perfectly acceptable, but you may have to take special measures to ensure that log rotation, if you re using it, handles additional log files. If you only write single lines to the log, you don t need to use file locking (because Unix guarantees that atomic writes to a file are complete before a new one is started). Otherwise, you ll have to implement it yourself in your CGI script. Continually opening and closing a log has its performance problems, though, particularly if you re potentially waiting for the file to be free. A good Unix alternative is to use the syslogd daemon with a unique facility name to identify your application. 9 covers this in detail.
