Logging is an important aspect of any web application and allows potential problems to be traced and critical errors to be logged. Unfortunately, with Java only including logging as part of the platform since JDK 1.4, it is too often the case that logging encompasses writing to standard out. Using standard out is an option, of course, but you will be much better served by using a flexible logging system. Luckily every Grails controller includes a logging mechanism already; so now there is no excuse to not log information appropriately. The log property is an instance of org.apache. commons.logging.Log, the interface for which can be seen in Listing 7-5. Listing 7-5. The implication of this is that you can write code without any try/catch blocks whatsoever. This is probably not the wisest decision in every circumstance, however; and when an exception does occur in your application it is good to log the exception so that it can be captured by one of your loggers. In Listing 7-6 I have committed the ultimate sin of simply catching java.lang.Exception instead of a more specific exception, but what is important is to understand the concept of logging exceptions.
